Polar H10 Chest Strap vs Polar H9 Heart Rate Sensor

Quick verdict

Winner on Gym Score: Polar H9 Heart Rate Sensor (85)

Same brand, two strap tiers. The H10 is the premium strap with internal memory (records workouts without a phone), better pod construction, and slightly more accurate ECG. The H9 is the entry strap with the same core sensor but no internal memory and slightly less robust hardware. For most users, the H9 is genuinely enough. For triathletes who swim without a phone or want offline recording, the H10's memory is worth the extra.

Choose Polar H10 Chest Strap if…

Choose the Polar H10 if you swim (the H10 records underwater without a paired device), want offline workout recording, or value the better-built pod for years of daily use.

The real tradeoff

Internal memory is the main feature delta. The H10 holds one workout that syncs to Polar Flow later — useful for swimming, multi-sport transitions, or any time you can't have a phone nearby. The H9 requires a paired device for every workout. If your phone is always with you, the H9's lower price wins. The H10's pod is also more replaceable — Polar supports out-of-warranty pod replacement on the H10 line specifically.

Skip both if…

Skip both if you don't already own a phone or watch that pairs to a chest strap. Standalone heart rate displays exist but are clunky. Browse /category/heart-rate-monitors for integrated options.

Buyer questions

Is the H10 actually more accurate than the H9?

By a hair, in lab conditions — but the difference is irrelevant outside of research settings. For training, both produce equally usable HR data. The accuracy claim is more about the H10's better pod-to-strap connection holding signal during high-motion activities.

How long does the strap last?

The pod (sensor) lasts 5+ years with battery replacements (CR2025 coin cell, every 1 to 2 years). The fabric strap wears out faster — typically 1 to 2 years of regular use before the conductive surface degrades. Replacement straps are $25 to $30.

Will the H9 work for triathlon?

Yes for the bike and run portions, no for the swim (no internal memory means no recording underwater without a paired waterproof device). For pure triathlon, the H10 is the better choice. User adherence over months matters more than peak intensity in any single session — pick what you'll actually use.
