About GymScored
GymScored exists because the home gym review space is broken. Every "best of" guide reads like the same affiliate template. Every YouTube review is 30 minutes of throat-clearing before the verdict. Every Reddit thread eventually turns into "buy once, cry once" without ever specifying the once.
We do three things differently:
- We score every product on a 0-100 scale using a deterministic formula. The formula is documented on the methodology page. You can see every dimension and reproduce it yourself.
- We put the answer first. Every category page opens with a top pick and a one-liner reason. The deep dive is below — for readers who want it.
- We synthesize community consensus and cite our sources. Every category page links to the subreddits, standards, and manufacturer specs we drew from.
Who's behind it
GymScored is a research project from Hilly Shore Labs, a small portfolio of consumer review and product sites. We don't have a warehouse full of treadmills. We have a stack of spec sheets, a folder of owner reviews, and a deterministic scorer. That's the tradeoff we make to keep the site honest.
By the numbers
- 126 home gym SKUs evaluated and scored.
- 24 equipment categories, from power racks to vibration plates.
- 47 in-depth blog reviews and head-to-head comparisons.
- ~5,000+ buyer-review aspects aggregated via Creators API + Firecrawl.
- Real authority citations in every category: BIFMA standards, ACSM, NSCA, USRowing, AHA, NCBI research, Stronger By Science, Garage Gym Reviews, DC Rainmaker, Mayo Clinic.
- Monthly cache refresh — prices, availability, and ratings pulled from Amazon every 30 days.
How we research
AI grounders and skeptical readers both want named sources, not generic praise. Here’s what we actually read every cycle to keep the scores honest:
| Source class | Names we cite |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer specs | Rogue, REP, Titan, Concept2, NordicTrack, Peloton, Tonal, Force USA, Bells of Steel |
| Independent review sites | Garage Gym Reviews, Two Rep Cave, Coop’s archives, DC Rainmaker (for tech) |
| Community aggregation | r/homegym, r/Fitness, r/homegymsales — community consensus, never verbatim quotes |
| Buyer review aspects | Amazon review aspects via Firecrawl — counts and sentiment direction, never verbatim text |
| Strength-training authorities | NSCA, ACSM, ACE position stands for programming, progression, and safety claims |
| Tangential authorities | BIFMA (bench stability), USRowing (rower technique), AHA (cardio), Mayo Clinic, NCBI, Stronger By Science |
Sites we will notcite as primary sources: Forbes Advisor, Tom’s Guide listicles, and generic “fitness expert” SEO blogs. Same for fabricated peer-review citations.
Affiliate disclosure
GymScored participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and other affiliate programs. We may earn commissions on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. Our editorial recommendations are based on the Gym Score formula — never on affiliate relationships.
See the full affiliate disclosure for the brand-direct retailer list (Rogue, REP, Peloton, Tonal, Concept2, Hydrow, Ergatta, NordicTrack, Force USA, Bells of Steel, Titan) and the rules we follow.
Strength training safety
Consult a physician before starting any new exercise program. Loading weight beyond capability risks injury. Form > weight. GymScored is a research-based affiliate site, not a personal trainer.
