Polar Vantage V3 vs Polar H9 Heart Rate Sensor

Quick verdict

Winner on Gym Score: Polar Vantage V3 (86)

Watch versus strap — not really a comparison, but a question of what you want to wear. The Vantage V3 is a $600 multisport GPS watch with wrist HR. The H9 is a $60 chest strap with no display. If you want one device that does everything (HR, GPS, sleep, training metrics), V3. If you have an existing watch or phone and only need accurate HR, H9. Most serious athletes pair both.

The real tradeoff

The V3's wrist HR is noticeably less accurate than the H9 during high-intensity intervals and weight training. Most Vantage V3 owners eventually buy an H9 or H10 to pair via Bluetooth for accurate HR during hard sessions. So the $60 H9 may end up being part of the V3 setup anyway. Daily-wear comfort also differs — many users find chest straps less comfortable for all-day wear than the V3 watch.

Skip both if…

Skip both if your training is mostly steady-state running or cycling and you have a recent Apple Watch or Garmin. Those devices' wrist HR is good enough for most needs. Browse /category/heart-rate-monitors for upgrade options.

Buyer questions

Can the V3 work without the H9?

Yes — the V3 has wrist HR and GPS built in. It's a complete training watch. The H9 is an optional upgrade for accuracy during high-intensity workouts where wrist HR struggles. User adherence over months matters more than peak intensity in any single session — pick what you'll actually use.

Does the V3's GPS work without a phone?

Yes — built-in multi-band GPS. Records routes, pace, and elevation independently. Phone is needed only for syncing to Polar Flow and downloading routes. User adherence over months matters more than peak intensity in any single session — pick what you'll actually use.

How long does V3 battery last?

Polar claims up to 140 hours in low-power GPS mode, 43 hours in standard GPS. Real-world use with daily GPS workouts of 1 hour, plus optical HR and notifications, lasts 5 to 7 days between charges. Compared to the H9 (1-year battery), the V3 needs much more frequent charging.
