Zwift Hub One vs Saris H3 Direct Drive
Quick verdict
Winner on Gym Score: Zwift Hub One (89)
Different generations of trainer. The Saris H3 is a mature, premium direct-drive with full multi-cassette support and large flywheel. The Zwift Hub One is the newer budget option with single-cog simplicity. For Zwift-only riders on a tight budget, Hub One. For cyclists who want a trainer that works with everything and feels like a real bike, H3. The H3 is roughly $400 more but earns it through versatility and road feel.
Choose the Zwift Hub One if you ride only Zwift, want the cheapest direct-drive trainer that just works, and have one bike that's Cog-compatible.

The real tradeoff
Resale value is asymmetric. Saris H3 holds resale value well (10+ years of brand reputation, standard parts). The Zwift Hub One is newer and ecosystem-locked — resale demand depends on Zwift's continued popularity. If you might upgrade in 2 to 3 years, the H3 returns more on resale. Resale value also favors the H3 — Saris has 15+ years of brand reputation, while Hub One depreciates with Zwift ecosystem changes.
Skip both if your bike has a 9- or 10-speed cassette. Direct-drive trainers work best with 11- and 12-speed setups. Older drivetrains need an adapter and sometimes still shift poorly. Browse /category/smart-trainers for wheel-on options.
Buyer questions
Is the Hub One quieter than the H3?
The H3 is the quieter trainer at sustained power — about 59 dB versus the Hub One's roughly 62 dB. Both are quiet for the category, but the H3's larger flywheel and tighter belt make it the apartment-friendliest direct-drive on the market.
Does the Saris H3 need a cassette?
Yes — Saris ships the H3 without a cassette ($60 to $120 separate purchase). You can use your existing bike's cassette by removing it temporarily, but most owners buy a dedicated trainer cassette. Zwift Hub One ships with the Cog pre-installed.
Which has better ride feel?
The H3 by a meaningful margin. Larger flywheel (20 lb vs. 12 lb on Hub One), more inertia, more momentum on flats. The Hub One feels accurate but lighter — closer to a Spin bike than a road bike. As with most fitness equipment, the best choice is the one you'll actually use consistently over the next 12 months.
