Dark Iron Fitness Genuine Leather Belt vs Adidas Powerlift 5 Shoes
Quick verdict
Winner on Gym Score: Dark Iron Fitness Genuine Leather Belt (92)
Belt and shoes both belong in a lifter's kit, but if you have to pick one, get the belt. The Dark Iron belt adds intra-abdominal pressure for squats and deadlifts — measurable strength on day one. The Adidas Powerlift 5 is a flat, heel-elevated shoe for squats and Olympic lifts — improves squat depth and ankle mobility issues but does less for raw strength. Belt for performance, shoes for technique.
Choose the Dark Iron belt first if you squat or deadlift above bodyweight, lift in normal sneakers now, and want the single highest-ROI accessory purchase.

The real tradeoff
Shoes are a comfort upgrade with technique benefits; belts are a performance upgrade with safety benefits. The hidden cost of shoes is that they only work in the gym — you change in, change out. The belt slides on over any gym clothes in 5 seconds. Powerlift 5s also have a learning curve for deadlifts: many lifters pull better in flat shoes or Converse, so the elevated heel can actually hurt deadlift technique.
Skip both if you're a beginner under 6 months of training. Sneakers work fine and your form needs more development before equipment compensates for it. Browse /category/lifting-accessories when you're ready.
Buyer questions
Can I deadlift in Powerlift 5s?
Yes, but most lifters prefer flatter shoes for deadlifts — the elevated heel adds range of motion (longer pull) without adding leverage. Many powerlifters wear Powerlift 5s for squats and switch to Converse or barefoot for deadlifts. Some leave them on for both; it's lifter-dependent.
Do squat shoes really matter?
They matter most for lifters with limited ankle dorsiflexion — heel elevation lets you reach depth without losing balance backward. For lifters with naturally mobile ankles, the benefit is small. Test by squatting with weight plates under your heels: if depth and posture improve dramatically, shoes will help meaningfully.
How long does a leather belt last?
Decades, properly cared for. Keep it dry, condition the leather every year or two, and don't fold it for storage. Many serious lifters use the same belt for 15+ years. The Dark Iron 10mm leather is heavy-duty enough that it likely outlives your lifting career.
