The real tradeoff
The belt is a permanent capability upgrade — fits forever, works for every lift, and one belt lasts decades. Wraps are situational gear: they help only on heavy squats, they take 30 seconds to wrap between sets, and they create dependency over time (lifters who always wrap struggle without them). There's also a learning curve gap: belt setup is intuitive within a session, wraps take weeks to learn proper tension.

Will the belt help with bench press?
Marginally. Belts work by increasing intra-abdominal pressure to stabilize the spine — relevant for squats, deadlifts, and overhead press. For bench, the contribution is small. Most powerlifters wear a belt for bench out of habit, but the strength gain is under 2 percent.
Should I use knee wraps or knee sleeves?
Different tools. Sleeves (neoprene, 5-7mm) provide warmth and mild compression for working sets. Wraps (stretchy fabric, tightly wound) provide significant rebound assistance from the bottom — meaningful weight added but joint stress goes up. Recreational lifters should use sleeves; competitive powerlifters in equipped divisions use wraps.
Is 10mm too thick for a beginner belt?
