The real tradeoff
Maintenance asymmetry is the long-term tradeoff. The WaterRower needs periodic purification tablets in the tank to keep the water clear. Concept2 needs almost nothing — wipe it down and oil the chain now and then. The WaterRower usually costs more, too, for tracking that is less precise.
Skip both if you want guided classes — neither has a built-in class screen. The class-driven option is Hydrow Origin.
Buyer questions
Does the WaterRower track watts and splits accurately?
Less accurately than the Concept2 PM5. The WaterRower's S4 monitor shows stroke rate, distance, and time reliably, but its calorie and watts figures don't follow the Concept2 standard. If you'll ever compare your numbers to Concept2 rankings or published rowing standards, the Concept2 is the one to buy.
How loud is each rower?
Concept2's air flywheel gets loud at high effort — a fan-like whoosh that owners report carrying through walls and floors. The WaterRower is much quieter, with the water sloshing as the dominant sound. For apartments above neighbors, the WaterRower is the better call.
Which one is easier to store?
Both can live upright. The Concept2 RowErg separates into two pieces for storage, and the WaterRower tips up on its end to stand against a wall. Check your ceiling height before planning on vertical storage for either.
