The real tradeoff
Maintenance asymmetry is the long-term tradeoff. The WaterRower needs water-tank tablets every few months to prevent algae growth, and the tank needs draining/refilling roughly annually. Concept2 needs almost nothing — wipe down the chain, occasional oiling, replace the seat rollers at year 15+ if you've been heavy on it. The WaterRower is also significantly more expensive (often $1,400+) for what's measurably less precise tracking. Buyer questions
Does the WaterRower track watts and splits accurately?
Less accurately than the Concept2 PM5. The WaterRower's S4 monitor shows stroke rate, distance, and time reliably, but its calorie and watts estimates use a model that doesn't match the global Concept2 standard. If you'll ever compare your numbers to published rowing standards, the Concept2 is the only valid answer.
How loud is each rower?
Concept2 (air resistance) hits around 70-75 dB at high effort — louder than a vacuum. WaterRower is dramatically quieter, around 50-55 dB, with the water sloshing as the dominant sound. For apartments above neighbors, the WaterRower is the better call.
Why isn't the Concept2 on Amazon?
Concept2 sells direct-to-consumer only — they've never used third-party retailers. Order through concept2.com. Shipping is reliable (typically 2-4 weeks) and customer service is excellent. The trade-off is no Amazon Prime convenience.
