Best BudgetRank #6 in Weight Benches
Marcy Flat Utility Weight Bench (SB-315)
by MarcyBuy first
Score
The flat bench this category was missing. Every other bench ranked here adjusts, and adjustment is the part that wobbles, rattles and eventually develops play. A fixed flat pad has no hinge, no ladder and no pop-pin, so the only things that can be wrong with it are the frame and the upholstery — and at 18 lb of powder-coated steel tube with a 600 lb capacity Marcy states for it, both are competent. Buy it as a dedicated pressing and dumbbell-row bench, or as the second bench that lives next to the rack so the adjustable one stays set where you want it.
- A dedicated flat bench for barbell and dumbbell pressing, rows and step-ups, where an adjustable bench is more mechanism than the job needs
- A second bench beside a rack, so the adjustable one can stay set at your working incline
- Small rooms — 41 inches long, 18 lb, and it stands on end against a wall
- You want incline pressing or a seated shoulder press — buy one of the adjustable benches ranked above instead
- You need a certified capacity figure; the 600 lb number is Marcy's own claim and we have not tested it
- You want a competition-width pad or a wheel-and-handle bench you can roll
About 4 x 3 ft of clear floor to use it, plus enough space either side to rack a barbell or swing dumbbells. Stores upright against a wall in roughly a 16 x 14 inch footprint.
easy — Bolt the two legs to the frame rail and you are done — one person, well under half an hour, with the hardware and wrench included. Snug all four bolts, load the bench, then re-torque; the first session settles the joints.
A bench is the second thing you buy after a rack or a set of dumbbells. A flat one is the cheapest version of that step and never becomes redundant.
Strengths
- ↑No hinge, no pop-pin, no ladder — nothing in the frame can develop play
- ↑600 lb capacity, manufacturer-stated, on a heavy-duty steel tube frame
- ↑18 lb and 41 inches long, so it drags out of the way one-handed
- ↑Rating volume is deep enough to be meaningful, which is rare at this price
- ↑Powder-coated finish and boxed high-density-foam upholstery
Weaknesses
- ↓Flat only — no incline, no decline, no seat angle
- ↓Pad sits at a fixed 16.5 inches, lower than the 17-17.5 inches most adjustable benches use — fine for shorter lifters, a compromise for tall ones
- ↓No wheels or handle; you lift it rather than roll it
- ↓Capacity is the manufacturer's figure, not an independently certified rating

The budget bench, and it still carries an ASTM certification — the thing actually worth checking on a cheap bench, because the failure mode is you under a loaded bar.
The bench with attachments — leg extension and preacher curl pad — which is what makes a single bench cover more of a full-body session when there is no room for separate stations.
The heavy end. YOLEO state an ASTM certification with a 2315 lb rating on 8-gauge steel, which is the specification to look for if you are pressing genuinely heavy weight at home.
REP's flagship adjustable bench — 11-gauge steel frame, 1,000 lb capacity, 21 total adjustments (7 back × 3 seat), vertical-storage stand included. Garage-gym standard for the "buy once, cry once" tier under $500. Notable for the ladder-style adjustment that doesn't lose position under load.
The reference bench. 1,000 lb capacity, ladder adjust, zero wobble, USA-made. Benches in commercial gyms worldwide. Price premium vs Rep is real but justified.
