Listings tell you motor horsepower, top speed and heater count. None of them tell you the thing that decides whether the machine actually runs in your house: what the circuit behind that outlet is already carrying. It is the quiet blocker behind a lot of home gym builds, and the honest answer is narrower than the forums suggest.
What the manufacturers actually ask for
Read the manuals instead of the threads and one pattern shows up immediately. Almost nothing in a home gym asks for a 20-amp circuit. What the makers ask for is an ordinary 15-amp, 120-volt circuit with nothing else on it.
The Sole F80 owner's manual specifies a "120-volt, 15-amp grounded outlet with only the treadmill plugged into the circuit." The NordicTrack Commercial 1750 manual says the outlet "must be on a nominal 120-volt circuit capable of carrying 15 or more amps," and tells you not to plug other electrical devices into the same outlet.
The requirement is exclusivity, not capacity. Both manuals want an everyday circuit. They just want it to themselves, and in most houses that costs nothing to arrange.
The failure mode is a tripped breaker, not a fire
This is the part the spec sheets bury. Sole's manual says plainly that AFCI and GFCI breakers "may trip occasionally during exercise because of the high inrush currents of the treadmill drive electronics and motor," and adds that this "is an issue that affects all treadmill brands." Electrical code increasingly requires those breakers, so a newer house is more prone to this, not less.
That reframes the question. You are usually not protecting yourself from a hazard. You are protecting a workout from ending at minute 22 because something else on the circuit drew current at the wrong moment. Sole's manual names the usual culprits:

The one class that genuinely needs 20 amps
Infrared saunas are where the line actually gets crossed, and it is a size threshold rather than a brand one. Golden Designs lists its two-person Dynamic cabins, the family the Dynamic Saunas Andora belongs to, as "120V/15amp Non GFCI plug & play (Recommended Dedicated Outlet)." Its three-person Bellagio cabin is a different animal: "Special Electrical 120 V/20 AMP Non GFCI Dedicated Receptacle and breaker," with the manufacturer's own instruction to consult a certified electrician.
Chiller-fed cold plunges land in the same bracket for a different reason. They run for hours, not minutes. Plunge states that its All-In "will need to be plugged into an outlet with a dedicated 120V 15A circuit," and that the circuit "can not be used for any other electrical items."
Buy the tub before you price the panel work. An Ice Barrel 500 or The Cold Pod run on ice and need no power at all. The chiller is the powered part, and it is a separate purchase.
What needs nothing special
Most of a home gym draws less than a toaster. A Wahoo Kickr V6 runs off a power block rated at 12 volts and 5 amps, 60 watts maximum, which is laptop-charger territory. Walking pads such as the UREVO E4W plug into an ordinary outlet too, though it is worth reading the listed motor rating rather than assuming it matches the 3.25 HP deck in a full-size Sole F80. Cable machines, racks and adjustable dumbbells draw nothing at all.
If your build is strength plus a trainer plus a walking pad, you do not have an electrical question. You have an outlet question.
Check this before you buy
- Find the amp figure in the manual, not the listing. Product pages rarely publish it. Owner's manuals always do, and they are free to download before you order.
- Count what is already on that circuit. Flip the breaker and walk the room. Anything that dies is sharing.
- Note whether the breaker is AFCI or GFCI. If it is, expect nuisance trips and clear the circuit before assuming the machine is faulty.
- Treat "dedicated" as the maker's word, not yours. When a manual says dedicated, it means nothing else ever, not "nothing else running right now."
- Get a 20-amp run quoted only when the manufacturer specifies one. For a large sauna cabin that is a real electrician job. For a treadmill it almost never is.
The honest limit
